    Trieste

Trieste is an elegant port city in north-eastern Italy and the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It lies directly on the Adriatic coast, close to the border with Slovenia, and has been an important hub between Central and Eastern Europe for centuries. The city uniquely blends Italian, Austrian and Slavic influences, which are reflected in its architecture and culture. The cityscape is characterised by magnificent squares such as Piazza Unità d’Italia, historic coffee houses and imposing buildings from the era of the Habsburg Monarchy. Miramare Castle, situated picturesquely on a rocky cliff overlooking the sea, is particularly well known. At the same time, Trieste offers a vibrant cultural scene, a long waterfront promenade and a major port, which continues to play a central role in the city’s economy to this day.
